Antonin Dvorak - New World Symphony No. 9 2nd Movement
The entire symphony is wonderful but the largo really stands out. Interesting how a Czech composer writing a “postcard to home” captures the end of the American 19th century so fluently… although maybe that makes perfect sense. While American composers and critics were wrought with finding a sound to call their own, Dvorak made the simple and elegant (although controversial) decision to draw not into European tradition, but Native and African American. At the risk of sounding overstated, I can’t help but feel the pristine and verdant dawn this second movement presents. His variations are so well delivered that it’s hard to call them variations at all, but more of a single idea continuously pulled from its source; like unwinding a spool into a perfectly woven native trade blanket. I hate writing similes, just listen.

Lyra - Bestfriends
No fooling, today Chicago-based duo Bestfriends blesses us with this downtempo progressive funk track off their new EP. Most tracks off the album are upbeat with a dancey feel, but Lyra is unique in its soft nature. Carrying just as much funk within its grooving bassline and syncopated guitar riffs, this track also has a dreamy feel when accompanied by the echoed and looping vocals that are cleverly backmasked at 3:16. Their EP Refine is available TODAY with five other equally impressive tracks—my personal favorite is The Way I Feel. Be sure to show Bestfriends some funky love and follow on facebook and twitter.
